The Bye System

The system works so that a person selected by lot to be a "Bye" is put in the next round of pairs as though he/she has won their first match.

No system of figuring "Byes" may be perfectly fair, but this has been selected because it has been found to be the most fair and timely of all systems.

Match referees who are not certain how to use the system should ask for assistance before any pairings or matches.

Note: Once the byes are selected and the pairings are set, the match referee may not make any changes or allow other persons to enter the division.

How to figure the "Bye" system

We are working on the single elimination system similar to the NCAA Playoffs, "The Final Four". In order to to end the division with 2 competitors sparring for 1st place, it will be necessary to start with a
group of either
2, 4, 8, 16, or 32... If you only have 5 competitors, you will need to add 3 to bring your total to 8. The 3 is also the number of "Byes" (automatic winners) you advance to the to the second round, while the remaining 2 competitors are the only first round match.

1) - Your total is 11 Competitors
2) -You need to round this up 16
3) - Add 5
4) - 5 is the magic number (the number of byes you need)
5) - 11 minus the 5 byes leaves 6
6) - 6 are matched as the first round eliminations in which 3 will advance to the second round
7) - The remaining 5 are advanced to the second round along
with the
3 winners of the first round
8) - These 8 become 4, then 2, then 1.
